Hanoi made its introduction before breakfast was finished. Scooters moved like water around the old quarter, metal stools appeared on pavements and the smell of coffee drifted from a doorway.
The journey was planned north to central, but not as a race. Two nights in Hanoi allowed time for a guided walk and time to get pleasantly lost. Halong Bay followed, where the pace changed completely: limestone towers, a quiet deck and a night away from traffic.
Hoi An provided the soft landing at the end. Mornings were for bicycles and nearby villages. Afternoons belonged to the hotel or beach. After sunset, lanterns reflected on the river and dinner became the main event rather than something squeezed between attractions.
The route worked because travel days were treated as travel days. Domestic flights, airport transfers and hotel check-ins take energy even when distances look short on a map.
Journeys Expert tip: first-time visitors can combine Hanoi, Halong Bay and Hoi An comfortably in eight to ten days. Add Ho Chi Minh City only when you have enough time to give each region its own rhythm.
